A THOUGHT FOR NOW - SO, WHAT ARE THE LIKELY ASPIRATIONS OF THE 'AVERAGE PERSON? PART 1

Image
The use of the term 'average' or 'common' is one which is really intended to help us to apply what we are saying to the largest distribution of the people we are presuming to be talking about.. To what extent the 'average' or 'common' person has any real meaning, outside of the members of, say a particular organisation, such as a political party, a religious sect, or a professional occupation body, is debatable. Whenever anybody take on the onerous task of 'speaking for the community', when there is conflict, he/she runs the risk of being challenged, as some people will say 'you do not speak for me.' Unless you are someone like the Pope, who is presumed to have some kind of divine authority.  One of the most forceful examples of a small group assuming to speak for the may, has to be the authors of the Constitution of the United States, especially the dictum that "We hold these truths to be self-evidenct..." FARC AND COLUMBIA - PEACE IS WORTH STRIVING FOR MORE THAT WAR, AND OF GREATER BENEFIT (La paz es digno de esfuerzo más que la guerra, y de mayor beneficio!)

Image
The Government of Colombia and what has remained of FARC, the guerrilla movement which has been fighting to overthrow the government, have finally signed an agreement to end the war which has been going on for the past 52 years. On 4th October 2016, the people of Colombia will be asked to cast their votes in support of or against the agreement. There is alot at stake, and the outcome could mean the resumption of the war, even if on a smaller, but probably more intense scale, as some of FARC's guerrillas return to the jungle to join the guerrillas who have refused to be a party  to the agreement, or as a new breakaway force.  Yet, we have to believe that this will simply not be allowed to happen. Some Colombians, including the former President, Uribe, are opposed to the agreement. For them, it seems, nothing short of exterminating the guerrillas or throwing them all into the dungeons, will suffice. At least, for now, with the hope that, in the course of time, even the

Magpie Ritual. Soundless Version

This is a video of our old Magpie, some would say, friends, and others, probably fiends, doing a bit of their ritualistic thing, which seems both intricate and entertaining. Take a look and derive from it what you will, including some of your deserved pleasure for today or tonight, depending on when you access it.

A THOUGHT FOR NOW - WHY DID DAVID CAMERON, FORMER PRIME MINISTER, CUT AND RUN FROM PARTY POLITICS? PART 2

Image
Even if David Cameron's decision to resign from party politics had been influenced by the expediency of wanting to spare his successor some awkwardness, it is certainly not the only or, probably, even the main factor. It is likely that David Cameron wanted spare himself the embarrassment and humiliation of having to answer to any of the blame which the FAC has attributed to him. I believe that Mr Cameron was given prior notice of the damning report of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and that he and the Conservative Party and their advisors, had concluded that the best way of dealing with the implications of the report was for him to resign from politics. It is surprising that, after the debacle of the Iraq invasion, David Cameron, Barak Obama and the 'Coalition governments' which invaded Libya, still allowed themselves, expediently, to have been motivated by the principle of inteterate addict; namely that, 'it will be different this time.' Irrespective of

JUST A THOUGHT - WHY DO THE AMERICAN, FRENCH AND BRITISH GOVERNMENTS DISRESPECTS THE YEMENIS'?

Image
So, why does Ms Power, the American Ambassador to the United Nations, and her British and French colleagues not call a Security Council meeting on what their Saudi and UAE allies are doing to Yemen and the Yemenis? Is it that the lives of the Yemenis do not matter to them or that they do not matter to them as much as the lives of their, the Americans, British and French Syrian proxy fighters in Aleppo? Are we to believe that this unholy trinity of British, French and American governments are really more concerned for the lives of Syrian civilians, than they do for the lives of Yemeni civilians? That Ms Power is not only playing with words when she accuses the Russians of "barbarism" in their bombing of Aleppo, but assumes a position of mutism, when it comes to the Saudis, and, by implications, both the British and the Americans, mercilessly bombing Yemen back into the stone age? Doubtlessly on the basis that that country, according to their worldview, is little m

THE BATTLE FOR ALEPPO - WHY IS THE HYPOCRITICAL WEST BEING SO APOPLECTIC? PART 2

Image
Confronted with the tragic war which is consuming Syria and her people, it is arguable that the participant western nations have been dragging their feel in helping to bring it to an end. Indeed, it seems reasonable to argue that their decision to arm and support the rebels is the main reason why this proxy war is still going on in the sixth year after it was started. So, why is it that the Americans and Nato and their coalition allies, want to prolong the war in Syria, in an attempt to strengthen their and their proxies' position? Which is the real reason why they are opposed to the current Syrian campaign against eastern Aleppo.  Far from being concerned about civilian casualties in Aleppo, what the west is really concerned about, it to protect the rebels who are occupying it. The west, like the rebels, are simply using the plight of the civilian population to protect the rebels. In this respect, how is the west's and the rebels' use of the civilian popula
