JUST A THOUGHT - ON BRITAIN'S NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE'S 70TH BIRTHDAY. PART 2.

Image
They become almost an on-demand service, and, since the consumer or patient oftentimes does not have to pay anything like the actual cost of the service.   At the point of it being provided, open to misuse and abuse of the system.  The whole culture of the relatively free national health service is premised on the false belief that you can be cured of nearly any sickness or disease.   And that you are entitled to any treatment necessary to cure you or alleviate your adverse medical condition.  The situation becomes even more untenable when it is applied to everybody. Which is partly the reason why Britain's National Health Service, during the year of its, her 70th birthday, is largely a broken or breaking system.  Too much is expected and being asked of it. Much more than it can continue to give, even if the amount of funding continue to be increased exponentially. It might be expected that, like a doctor, Britain's NHS should be able to 'heal i

JUST A THOUGHT - ON ZIMBABWE'S ELECTIONS AND THE NEED NOT TO DESPAIR. PART 1.

Image
The delay in announcing the outcome of Zimbabwe's first post-Robert Mugabe enections was becoming volatile and unbearable.  The MDC and its leader, Nelson Chamisa, and its supporters were getting to the point where they were at imminent risk of losing control.  They were impatient with what they saw as the ZEC's undue and, at least to them, suspicious delay in declaring the MDC and Chamisa the winners of the election.  How could it have been otherwise, they reasoned amongst themselves?  How could ZANU-PF and Emerson Mnangagwa have expected to win, when ZANU-PF has been so thoroughly discredited.  And the people of Zimbabwe have, if not created, added to the momentum which saw the party former leader, Robert Mugabe turfed out of office.   By no other than his henchmen, including EM, in order to save their own skins?  How, indeed, could they have expected that the people of Zimbabwe, at least, the nearly 5 million eligible electorate who voted.   Would have

Blessed and accursed can be a people who, when they are really sick, do not have to suffer the additional trauma of becoming overly worried about the medical cost of their treatment.  Such are the people of the United Kingdom, whose National Health Service has their backs. In order for us humans to enjoy the beauty of life and living, at its best, it is necessary for us to be in a state of reasonably good health.  We can be at our best, not only when we are free of physical, emotional and /or psychological pain.  But also we all of our senses are in good health. When we are able to see, to feel, have movements to be able to touch, to hold, to taste, and to hear.  When we are in a state of pain, resulting from whatever ailment, which is beyond our capability or inclination to deal with ourselves.  We resort to accessing the medical services available to us outside.  The type of medical services we are able to access under the auspices of the state or publ

JUST A THOUGHT - IN PRAISE OF THE COURAGEOUS SHOPPER MOTHER! PART 1.

Image
Probably one of the most, if not the most difficult and responsibly challenge humans have, is that of effectively and appropriately dealing with the stresses they/we encounter in caring for our children. So, how are you, a stranger, to respond when you see and perceive, imagine, even, a young mother being harassed, goaded and driven to emotional desperation, by her young son?  As this mother, this human negotiate the aisles of the supermarket with her two young sons.   The contentedly and quietly walking by her side as she moves here and there, looking for and taking and placing in her trolley the items she needs.  But not so for her other son, who relentlessly cries and bewails his mother, by loudly exclaiming, 'mummy', 'mummy!'  A young child using a term of endearment, 'mummy', in a way which devalues it and makes his mummy feels terrible.  As, his cries of 'mummy', to those listening and pretending that they are not, might seem to

The Garden In Late June 2018

So, it is really surprising how quickly Spring and Summer can come and go, though not quite in the blink of an eye, but it does seem to be so at times.  Which is probably the reason for my preoccupation with this little floral world of the garden.  Which provides a well appreciated habitat for both the seen and unseen faunal creatures visiting and inhabiting it.  As well as making its contribution to filtering the air, by exchanging its life giving oxygen for the deadly carbon monoxide us humans produce. Please take a look and have a listen, and, if you are so inclined, do enjoy whatever moments of pleasure you extract.

JUST PHILOSOPHISING - ON WHETHER THE HUMAN CONDITION WILL GET BETTER? THE END...

Increasing probably faster than the earth and our sustainable and environmentally wealth creating and redistributive activities can lift them out of poverty. And conflicts and wars? As long as us humans breathe air, we will continue to make war on amongst ourselves.  As long as nations or parts of nations are blessed with an abundance of natural resources and others are cursed with scarcity.  As long as some nations are blessed with the money, the expertise and the vision of enlightenment to transform their now undesirable reality to a more enlightened one.  And others remain chained to, and to dragging the unenlightened traditions and customs of the past into and making them the present and the future of humans.  As long as humans take greater pride and interest in the individual parts.  In their 'own ethnic', their 'own religion and sect', their 'own part of the world', in their 'own interests' in their 'own nation and r

'Like death and bereavement, at times when we are experiencing what seems like 'our worse nightmares', we tend not to be aware of the fact that, 'our worse nighmares' are in fact no more than everyday adversities which many other people are having to contend with.' It would not be long before Nzuri and Mfanyazaki would draw a connection between the police siren and their son being arrested or being looked for by the police.  This led to Nzuri and Mfanyazaki – and probably Mzaliwa – becoming acutely anxious each time they hear a police siren.  As they would invariably assumed it that it would be on its way to their home; especially if Kazaliwa was out. Mfanyazaki remembered the day when his wife, at her wits end, went out of their house to confront the female police officer.  Who, once again, had turned up wanting to talk about Kazaliwa.  Without any apparent due respect for the law, Nzuri pointedly told the officer to clear

JUST PHILOSOPHISING - ON WHETHER THE HUMAN CONDITION WILL GET BETTER? PART 4.

Of course there will be periods when peace and stability will seem to be the order of the age in most places.  But such periods of calm and stability, lack of conflict and disquiet, are unlikely to be the norm. So, no. Unfortunately, in many places where poverty, gang warfares, ethnic, communal, tribal and religious conflicts are occurring.   They will continue to simmer or get worse. Of course some of the havesnot become achieve a certain amount of upward mobility, and will progress to joining the ranks of the haves.  Just as how some among the haves, despite their best efforts, are fated to become downwardly mobile, and will be demoted to joining the havesnots.  Some improvements will be wrought in parts of the dismal favelas, the 'slums' and ghettoes of the world.   But it is very likely that these forlorn  places, which have become the valued homes of millions, will continue to increase and expand. Becoming even more despairing and chaotic than

'Like death and bereavement, at times when we are experiencing what seems like 'our worse nightmares', we tend not to be aware of the fact that, 'our worse nighmares' are in fact no more than everyday adversities which many other people are having to contend with.' Mfanyazaki remembered how puzzling and worried they were when the young duty doctor persistently tried to find a vein in their son’s limbs, to get some blood for testing.  But, despite his big forearms, could not find any veins.  How when the doctor did succeed in finding a vein, he could not get any blood from them, because they had collapsed.   Just like how Kazaliwa had himself collapsed on the dark street that night, before they took him to the Accident and Emergency Ward of the hospital.  Mfanyazaki and Nzuri remembered the concerned look on the young doctor’s face, when he asked Kazaliwa if he was using drugs, and got an affirmative response.  As he remembered it, the doct
