JUST A THOUGHT - ON ZIMBABWE'S ELECTIONS AND THE NEED NOT TO DESPAIR. PART 1.

The delay in announcing the outcome of Zimbabwe's first post-Robert Mugabe enections was becoming volatile and unbearable. 

The MDC and its leader, Nelson Chamisa, and its supporters were getting to the point where they were at imminent risk of losing control. 

They were impatient with what they saw as the ZEC's undue and, at least to them, suspicious delay in declaring the MDC and Chamisa the winners of the election. 

How could it have been otherwise, they reasoned amongst themselves? 


How could ZANU-PF and Emerson Mnangagwa have expected to win, when ZANU-PF has been so thoroughly discredited. 

And the people of Zimbabwe have, if not created, added to the momentum which saw the party former leader, Robert Mugabe turfed out of office.  

By no other than his henchmen, including EM, in order to save their own skins? 

How, indeed, could they have expected that the people of Zimbabwe, at least, the nearly 5 million eligible electorate who voted.  


Would have voted to retain the failed political party and regime which has ruined the nation?

And then, the unexpected happened; the ZANU-PF regime held on to power, even though it has only done so by the skin of its teeth, as the old saying goes. 

This was clearly not what the MDC leaders were expecting. Neither was it what millions of Zimbabweans and other people in Africa and around the world were hoping for. 

The outcome of Zimbabwe's election is a finely balanced one, but one which still leaves the ZANU-PF with the strongest hand.

   It is unlikely that things were ever getting better.
