LEWIS HAMILTON AT THE HELM; HAMMER TIME?!

Image
That Lewis Hamilton is on Pole at the Austrian Grand Prix is good but not really surprising news, considering the fact that him, his team and his car working as an indivisible unit, is capable of achieving these feats  like clockwork; providing the gods continue to  give him his fair share of good fortune. And now, are we in for another potentially exciting Grand Prix, with Lewis having the edge, by virtue of his experience, the quality of his car, the support of his Team Mercedes, and the fact that he will be starting on Pole position. Lewis, you have not been good, so far this year, at converting your hard won Pole positions into the added advantage they should be according you. It is, of course, vital that you do so, by getting immaculate or brilliant starts. It is vital that you capitalise on your team mate, Rosberg's, misfortune in having to start in fifth position, instead of the second, which he has attained.  It is only by capitalising on each other'

WEDDINGS AS SYMBOLISATION OF THE UNION OF TWO PEOPLE AND THEIR COMMUNITIES?

Image
Part of the Hanbury Marriott Hotel Hertford, it might be said, is one of those towns which are located in England's idealised or idyllic  green and pleasant lands. And it was to Hertford that my partner and I went on a recent pleasant and sunny Saturday, to attend the seemingly long awaited wedding of my partner's relative and his elegant and beautiful bride. We travelled for probably 150 miles and spent over 3 hours, including a short comfort break at a motorway service station, getting Hertford. Upon arriving there, we made our way to the Cafe' hotel, Cinnabar, in Fore Street. Nowhere to park so we proceeded to find the multi-storey car park which the member of staff from Cinnabar Hotel kindly directed us towards. We found it alright, having to bypass it on the opposite side of the road, then making our way to the next roundabout and then coming back on ourselves before darting off along the entry to the car park.  By the time we had parked the car, we had

The Squirrel That Refused To Share!

Image
Some readers will have seen this squirrel on previous exploits, so, this can be considered as the further or on-going adventures of this squirrel, as he/she, with great agility, goes through the process of obtaining his/her daily feed. Of course, he/she does tend to display the more negative aspects of the animal world, by refusing to share and driving away other squirrels daring to try to get some of the food. The matched music is rather high tempo. Have a look and see if it provides you with some fun or relaxation.

A JAMAICAN CHILDHOOD - A NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN EXPERIENCE

Image
Part of the now badly eroded landscape which Shaka and his family and friends spent their childhood. As Shaka remembered it, there he was happily stripping the hard skin of the length of juicy sugar cane with his teeth and biting into it, when something dreadful occurred. Without any warning, he found himself being held firmly by his hand by a man who, it would almost immediately transpired, was one of the Rangers or Overseers working on the Estate.   Before Shaka could figure out what was happening, the man began taking him away from his brothers and friends, with whom he had gone stealing sugar cane. When the Ranger asked Shaka where his father was, and Shaka told him that he was in England, the man’s unsympathetic and firm response was, ‘.. and lef yuh to steal backra cane’, which was, on reflection, both a question and an affirmation of the insinuation that, yes, ‘him lef yu to do dat.’   When the Ranger began to talk about taking Shaka to Prison, his fe

SHOULD THE 'DEMOCRATIC WILL' BE ALLOWED TO RUIN A PEOPLE AND COUNTRY?

Image
Consider this: Fifty-two per cent of the British electorate who voted voted for their country to leave the European Union, with probably a substantial percentage of them not really knowing what that would mean for them, personally, and for the country in general. Now, consider this; is it likely that many of those voters might have cast their votes irresponsibly, without giving the matter sufficient consideration? If so, would they have acted with such laxity if it were they, directly, instead of the government, that had the responsibility for implementing Brexit and dealing with the consequences? 'Democracy', it is often said, confers 'rights' as well as 'obligations' and 'responsibilities' onto the electorate.  In this case, it would be instructive to know how many of the electorate have exercised their  'democratic' right, but without exercising the necessary responsibility to carefully consider the implications of cost of voting

THE LABOUR PARTY AND ANTI-SEMITISM - PARTY'S LEADER SHOULD SAY WHAT HE MEANS AND MEAN WHAT HE SAYS

Image
Labour and British Jewish citizens; still at all at sea, but in different ships? Britain's Labour Party has been accused of harbouring people who have been described as 'anti-semites', a term which is used to describe people who hate Jews for being Jews.  The Labour Party, in response, has denied the accusation, but has also, prudently, set up an independent enquiry to look into whether or not there is really any substance to the allegations. Now, with the Labour Party and all British political parties, being to a lesser or greater extent, representative of British society, it would be extremely surprising if there are no 'anti-semites' in it.  That would be like expecting to find nobody in Britain who hates Jewish people for being who they are, or who they are stereotyped into being seen as. A sort of classical prejudicial perspective, in which you accept the stereotypical perception of a race, ethnic group, gender group, or religious group, and then

LABOUR'S 'BRUTUSIAN' PARLIAMENTARIANS ARE INCITING JC'S SUICIDE, WITH HOMICIDE HAVING FAILED

Image
Unable to push their 'leader' of the 'bridge to the future', Labour's Parliamentarians, with the support of the British Prime Minister, resort to inciting him to 'jump.' For 'the right' thing to be 'the right thing' and truly effective and successful, it has to be done at the 'right time' as well. The rebellion by 172 British Labour Party Parliamentarians, is an example of 'the wrong' being done at the 'wrong time.' Instead of turning their flax on Britain's Conservative Government, and uniting to help deal with the Brexit crisis, the Parliamentarians chose to avoidably create a crisis for their Party, and turn their guns on their Leader. Yes, it is reasonable to argue that all 172 Labour Party Parliamentarians who voted to express 'no confidence' in their elected leader, Jeremy Corbyn, cannot all be 'wrong', whereas Jeremy Corbyn and the Party members who voted to elect him are all '

A THOUGHT FOR NOW - IN REMEMBRANCE OF WORLD WAR TWO AND OTHER WARS

Image
Europe, including the Russian Federation, has a tradition of having ceremonies to remember the dead and the suffering which past generations have had to endure in the wars they had fought. Whether they were wars they willingly fought or were, by force of circumstances, simply had to fight, such as to avoid genocide, and, as in the case of World War Two, to avoid genocide and world domination by the Nazis. There was a time when people spoke of "the glorious dead", but, fortunately, this illogical phrase is either never used or is rarely used now.  There is nothing 'glorious' about a person dying in war, or, for that matter, arguably, 'heroic', since the dead has no existence outside of the people who know or know of them. I am pondering the benefits of being constantly or annually  traumatised by ceremonies and the media programmes which are intended to remind the living of the brutality of politicians and nations, during a time when nobody who is

A THOUGHT FOR NOW - BREXIT : LIKE A BOAT HEADING TOWARDS A DESTINATION OVER WHICH ITS PASSENGERS ARE DISAGREED?

Image
Brexit - Live  boat, leaving port with passengers who are divided about their destination of travel I am minded of the harm which can emanate from undue preoccupation with anything, including the known and unknown effects which Britain's 'decision' to leave the European Union is giving rise to. Yet, it does seem to me that there is a need for continued and thorough debate of the principles and practices which have given arise to this, almost reckless situation.  The debate needs to take place between ordinary citizens, politicians, philosophers, political scientist, the judiciary, and business people. The questions which should preoccupy us - the British people and people of all other countries where the practice of referendum or plebiscite is used - should include the following: 1. Is a referendum or plebiscite the best or most appropriate method of making major decisions? 2. If they are, are there some issues and situations for which they are not suited or a

A JAMAICAN CHILDHOOD - HAVING FUN AND GAMES AND....

Image
The rather bleak view from Shaka's home, of where Janga Gully used to be Like children growing up anywhere in the world, playing and having fun was what Shaka wanted and enjoyed most in his childhood. He might not have realised it at the time, but playing and having fun, and, yes, suffering pain as well, was all essential aspects of the learning process. Shaka can recall playing with his younger brother under the elevated foundation of their house, where they would resort to using spiders and ants as their version of cows, goats and pigs. During his childhood Shaka was very close to his younger brother, and would spend a lot of his time playing with him and going for exploratory walks along the course of the Janga Gully and the more accessible parts of the Johnson River, to the grass fields and woodlands on the neighbouring Spring property, playing cricket, using home-made bats and young oranges, grapefruits and civil oranges as the ball. They would go to

A THOUGHT FOR NOW - STRIVE FOR A FUTURE NOT LOOKING TO RECREATING THE PAST

Image
Humans should strive to create a future which is free of racism, excessive prejudices and conflict, instead of attempting to recreate the past which was bought by great pain. There is no doubt that our individual and collective past, historically, colours, influence, and, for the more unfortunate amongst us, determine our present and our future. Humans, though most probably not the only animals which are able to do so, have the capacity to live in the past, the present and the future.  We, like other sentient animals, are able to draw on the collective and accumulated 'store of knowledge' which has become innate in us, and to conceive of and plan not only for how we survive today, the present, but also for tomorrow; the future. Arguably, however 'great' or 'horrible' our collective past was, or, rather, because of it, we should avoid dwelling on it, since it can only bring sadness and/or arrogance, misplaced pride and hatred to our present,

STRIKING DOWN OF TEXAS' ANTI-WOMEN ABORTION LAW - RIGHT DECISION !

Image
The women of Texas can now see their chosen path a bit more clearly It is with a sense of quiet pleasure that I received the news that the Supreme Court of the United States has struck down Texas's restrictive Abortion Law, which was intended to keep, at least the women of Texas, as the chattel of the religious and conservative bigots in that State. I am amazed by the effrontery of these Texas law-makers (politicians) who seemingly pursue oppressive measures against women, as if they are their contemporary slaves. I woman has the right to determine whether or not she wishes to or is able to responsibly maintain her pregnancy and bring the baby into what, after all, is not a world with an abundance of 'milk and honey.' Not only does she have the responsibility to feel and nurture her child, but, in times of ill-health, she and her partner, if she has one, can be confronted with crippling healthcare costs.  If she is poor and living in poverty, then having a chil

HAS THE BRITISH POLITICAL ESTABLISHMENT LOST ITS HEAD?

Image
Are the British people, like their political parties and country, in search of a prudent leader to lead them to the 'promised land.? The British political establishment is currently engulfed in a very bloody internecine war, of such gravity that it is probably unparalleled in the history of British party politics.  The  tumultuous challenge of how the country should go about its task of 'de-establishing' itself from the European Union, without doing mortal damage to itself, it seems, is not enough to prevent both the British Conservative Party and the Labour Party from providing more evidence of the expeditious nature of politics, by indulging in blood-letting with a vengeance. The British Labour Party is currently in renewed self-destruct mode, with its 'Brutusian' Members of Parliament, again, removing their daggers and swords from their scabbards to bring a murderous end to the Leadership of Jeremy Corbyn.  Their refrain, as it had been before t
