SHOULD THE 'DEMOCRATIC WILL' BE ALLOWED TO RUIN A PEOPLE AND COUNTRY?

Consider this:

Fifty-two per cent of the British electorate who voted voted for their country to leave the European Union, with probably a substantial percentage of them not really knowing what that would mean for them, personally, and for the country in general. Now, consider this; is it likely that many of those voters might have cast their votes irresponsibly, without giving the matter sufficient consideration? If so, would they have acted with such laxity if it were they, directly, instead of the government, that had the responsibility for implementing Brexit and dealing with the consequences?

'Democracy', it is often said, confers 'rights' as well as 'obligations' and 'responsibilities' onto the electorate.  In this case, it would be instructive to know how many of the electorate have exercised their  'democratic' right, but without exercising the necessary responsibility to carefully consider the implications of cost of voting to leave the EU? It is a situation which suggests the need for the state to do more to inform and educate the people  about how governments operate in a national and international context, how they impact on other nations and are impacted by them, the mechanisms which are at play and their functions.

Only then can the electorate be enabled to make informed decisions about major issues.

Only then will the likelihood of the electorate making poor and cost-ineffective, and even disastrous decision, which spineless politicians will construe as 'binding of their government', be avoided.

Endeavour to live your life in harmony with your fellow humans, and to avoid situations in which you refuse to review your decisions, even when it is patently obvious that your previous decision was a poor one, or that the cost of not changing it, could be disastrous for all involved. Businesses do not run on the principle of not changing or seeking to change a poor decision, so why should governments use the theory of 'democracy' to justify doing so?
