JUST A THOUGHT - ARE PRISONS A SYMBOL OF A PUNITIVE SOCIETY? THE END....

By increasing the number of statutes by which citizens can be criminalised. So as to provide a sufficient supply of inmates for the prison population.  

As we have seen, for example, in the United States of America. The so-called most advanced country in the world.  

But also undoubtedly, probably the most retrograde one, when it comes to the manufacturing of criminal laws, and administration of 'crime and punishment.' 

Since, not only does it make having more prisoners as a necessity, in order to keep the private companies holding and processing them, and the 'law enforcement departments, in business. 

But it also encourages corruption amongst all those involved in the crime and punishment industry, through the quest to generate income and profits.

Objectives which they seek to achieve by brutalising inmates and increasing their prospects for having to pursing a criminal career. 

By ensuring that inmates being discharged from the prison industry are less, and not more capable of pursuing a life outside of the vortex of the 'criminal justice' and prison system. 

And will continue to contribute towards making profits for the private contractors. Even though the whole system remains mired in injustice, inefficiencies, and ineffective, as fare as rehabilitation is concerned.

In this respect, yes, prisons as enclaves in which to incarcerate increasing numbers of humans, is both a symbol of a punitive society.  

As well as being a symbol of the relative enslavement of them/us for economic and/or financial gain or industry.

Sadly, it probably will not change, or not change much. 

Since it represents the views of the powerful political and economic elites.  Who have succeeded in either inculcating the masses with the 'justness' of 'the system.' 

Or are benefiting from the indifference of the masses to the 'unfortunate fate' of what they, the masses, might be perceiving as befalling 'only a bad or malevolent minority.'

The 'success' and dominance of the elites, lies in their capacity to 'cuckooed' the majority. 

In making them accept and/or aspire towards their values, their modus operandi, their worldview and 'successes', as also theirs. 

Even if, oftentimes, they, the masses, can only aspire towards their achievement, rather than realising them.

None of which augurs well for profound and positive changes in the 'criminal justice industry. 

With its terrible and brutal involuntary 'autonomisation', which we are seeing in some parts of the world.  Such as Brazil, et al, probably being an indication of its future in the United States, Britain, Europe, and other countries.
