The sudden recapture of Palmyra by Isis/Daesh and Syrian rebels provides a powerful shock to both the Syrian coalition fighting them, and the interested on-looker to the Syrian proxy war. How can it be, that Daesh, after having been driven out of Palmyra over 9 or so months ago, secreted themselves back into the surrounding neighbourhoods in such large numbers as to threaten and then retake Palmyra? The loss of Palmyra can be seen as somewhat on par with the loss of Mosul, Kirkuk and Kobane, in its suddenness and unexpectedness. What happened to the Syrian coalition and meddling western countries intelligence? Are we really to believe that the Russians, Syrians, Hezbollah, Iranian, American, British, French, German, Iraqi, Turkish, et al, had all been taken by surprise?
