A significant proportion of us humans have come to believe in, or accept the existence of a sentient god.  All all powerful deity who, we hope and even pray, is in control of the world, and, even more so, the way how we live our lives.  Like an insecure child or young adult, we want to know that somebody or something is 'in control.'  That our existence and the existence of what we can see, hear and feel, has some greater meaning than that of being 'here today, gone tomorrow', as it were.
