REFLECTIONS ON MAKING IT TO THE SMILING DENTIST.. PART 1.

Image
Did I really went through a 30 speed limit stretch of the road at or over 40, or was it not that fast?  And, if I had just done so, were there any cameras zeroing on my car?  Might I just have been caught on camera breaking the speed limit, despite the fact that, even though I was aware of the temporary reduction in the speed limit at this part of the road? Due to roads work taking place there.  Yes, it took only a brief lapse of concentration on the road. One of those moments which probably all drivers will have experienced in their driving careers.   When they/we become preoccupied with what we could call extraneous thoughts, and speed through the camera point or along the road above the speed limit.  And only realise it half way through, or after we have passed it.  With our, oops, being replaced with a state of shock and incredulity, as we become concerned about whether the camera caught us.  Hoping, at the sametime, that this was one of those instances when

Will it have mattered that blood had been spilled, homes, shops and other property had been set ablaze and damaged?  And livelihoods have been lost and neighbour has been set against neighbour, and citizen against citizen?  What if, despite all of this, French society, probably like all or most societies, were to be found to be no nearer to achieving and maintaining more equalite, fraternity and liberty?  And that, despite that, live in France goes on, even as it had done for centuries.  Because, that is what life is really all about; people, either the same or different ones, constantly struggling to have a better living.  As one generation takes over from the preceding, 'achievers' are replaced with 'dreamers' and aspirants.   And society, humanity, becomes, at times, probably most times, an incongruous amalgam of generations and sectional interests groups who are at different stages of their life's journey.  Looking, seeking and neg

JAMAICA: A NATION WHICH CONTINUES TO GO BACKWARD INSTEAD OF FORWARD? PART 1.

Image
Confronted with the powerful socio-economic and political pressures which are impacting all countries at present,  the people of Jamaica are, as the saying goes, hurting.  With different sections of the nation's population hurting to different extent, and, consequently, at times, being in conflict. This both famous and infamous island of Jamaica, which was probably the most prised emerald in the former British Empire, is currently having a hard time in the sphere of public relations at present.  Which, you could argue, is nothing new, if you happen to be aware of the very bad but well-deserved publicity it has been having, almost continuously for the past two to three decades or more. You see, the stereotypical Jamaican has become known as a brash, aggressive, feisty and even violent person.  The kind of person, who, atleast in the past, was know to attack the unsuspecting person who, in a crowded dance hall, accidentally stepped on his nicely polished

GOD'S RELATIONSHIP WITH HUMANS - A PROTECTIVE OR ABUSIVE ONE? PART 2.

'It seems to be one of the greatest paradoxes, and is axiomatic,  of the human condition.   That their/our God or gods, should be held in greatest esteem, where they appear to be most powerless to help the people who seem to be in greatest need of their help.  And that he/they, should be less needed, where they are less awed by the people, who seem to be in less need of their help.' Is really one of the latter purportedly making endless promises, which are not or are yet to be delivered. Probably never will. And there are still others, probably mainly among the believers, who would argue that the relationship between God, or the gods.'  Is one of adults-adults, with each dealing with the other on the basis of merit, of a mutual display of 'free-will' or reciprocity.  In other words, if humans do as the gods, as God is said to have required of them, of us.  Then all will be well, and the gods will then look after us, give us our daily bread, as it

It is the case where the religions of the world are concerned, in that they are all of the past.   But are, in many cases, incongruously brought into the present, to define the present as belonging to the past.  At times akin to the death continuing to live through the living, and therein depriving the living of their own living.   Instead of the present, the current generations, being able to come to their own reinterpret of the past, and using it to help them to create their own future.  Which, in time, will also become the past of the generations they will give life to. And what of the current crises in the world today? What if President Macron of France, is not able to prove himself to be a modern day Napolean What if the world is not going to end tomorrow or one day? Would we be caught unaware, unprepared to deal with what confront us?  Would we be happy, relieved, but worry about picking up the pieces and continuing?  What if, like Napoleon, his fame, n

Irrespective of the fact that, although the enslavers and colonisers belonged to the European and Arab 'races.' And would have had some benefit from the system, as it cascaded down legally, socially and economically.  It was not a straightforward process of Europeans and Arabs, en mass, enslaving Africans.  As tends to be the case, it is the elites and those nearest to them on the hierarchical ladder who set the pace and benefited most. Just as it continues to be today, and, probably, will always be, in human societies. The fact is that, 'good' is the sibling of 'bad', and 'bad' will, given the opportune circumstances, indulges in a 'bit of goodness.' Just as how 'good', when the right conditions arise, will not omit to indulge in some 'badness.' Which of us will refuse to have 'a bad person' save us from drowning, being consumed by fire, or being killed by some other means? It is terrible when us hum

AN ENIGMATIC AND POIGNANT JOURNEY AROUND MY AGEING AND EVOLVING MOTHER! PART 13.

Which could suggest that, either she is, indeed, more pain-free, or that she has reached the point of increased acceptance and resignation to her current state.  Something which, if it is indeed the case, would be a welcome development.  Since prudence and courage require us to come to terms with and learn to live as friction-free as we can.   With the things we are confronted with in our life's journey, which, although capable of and even doing us harm. We do not possess the means to overcome. But, enough of my ruminations about the sad, the sorrowful, the disappointing, the painful, the regretful and the poignant things and feelings, on which my dear mother's life is now predicated upon.  At times, seemingly like a once young and proud, industrious ship which has set sail upon the ocean.  Only to now, many decades later, find itself floundering in low tide, with its engine defective and it not having enough fuel to return to its port of
