CUBA: IN FROM THE COLD?

Aspiring towards a better life?!

President Obama, the President of the United States of America is currently visiting the inspirational island of Cuba, which is a de facto jewel in 20th Century revolutionary history. Of course, Cuba, before it became a pariah for her giant American neighbour to the north, has had a quite illustrious history in fighting against slavery and Spanish and American colonialism. Had it not had the good fortune to be separated by 90 miles of the North Atlantic Ocean, Cuba might have suffered  the same fate as Mexico, in having her territory appropriated by the United States, as this already massive country try to gain more land mass.

And now, after over 50 years of imposing a cruel and spiteful embargo of direct and indirect sanctions on the people of Cuba, in an attempt to bring to heal Fidel Castro's Revolutionary Government, President Obama, the first African-American President, and Raul Castro, the second President of Cuba, have brought about the historic and long overdue rapprochement between the American people and the Cuban people.

This is truly an epic milestone in Cuba and America's history. Cuba has been lauded for her advancements in fields such as medicine, healthcare and the educational achievements of her people, all of which they have had to work hard for. It seems fair to acknowledge that, being a revolutionary government and society, the people of Cuba have had to bear massive hardships in all spheres of their lives, including restrictions on their human rights, lack of consumer products, economic hardships, poorly maintained infrastructure, and restrictions on their political rights.

Despite these and other hardships, the government and people of Cuba have made massive contributions towards helping other revolutionary liberation struggles in other countries, such as Angola, Mozambique, South Africa, Nicaragua, et al, to triumph.  She has helped other countries in the Caribbean, Africa and South America to address problems they had experienced by providing medical and other expertise.

With Fidel Castro having past the leadership baton to his brother, Raul Castro, President Obama having become POTUS, and many European, African, South American and Caribbean leaders being fedup with the fundamental unfairness and oppressive nature of the American sanctions against Cuba and her people, the essential conditions have been set to bring Cuba in from the cold.

Cuba and her people have, for too long, been unfairly denied the economic, political and social interaction with the rest of the world, to which they are entitled, but have been denied, because succeeding American Presidents, prior to Obama, lack the courage to exercise bold leadership, instead of  cowardly maintaining the archaic status, dictated by reactionary but politically influential Cuban exiles, such as Mario Rubio, Tex Cruz, et al.

Cubans need opportunities to make their dreams a reality

I wish the Cuban government and people a successful transition to fully participating in the global economy and international affairs, and that, in so doing, the country does not become a resource to be exploited by the few for themselves, but that all Cubans benefit significantly from the process.

They deserve it!
