CRICKET, LOVELY CRICKET - WI 2020 CHAMPS.

Looking ahead

The astonishing success of both the West Indies men and women cricketers, in winning the Twenty20 Championships in India, has brought much joy to the people of the West Indian islands, and to cricket lovers all over the world.

Long gone are the days when the West Indies cricket team was the top playing cricket team, with such masters of the sport as Gordon Greenidge, Rohan Kanhai, Kallicharan, Clive Lloyd, Andy Roberts, Viv Richards, Michael Holding, Joel Garner, Malcolm Marshall, Colin Croft, Chanderpaul, Curtley Ambrose, et al, et al.

More recently we have had Brian Lara breaking records after record. and even more recently, Gayle doing thrilling things with his bat.  However, for too many years now, except for the occasional spectacular wins such as the one on Sunday, the once great West Indian cricket team has been only a poor shadow of its former glorious self. So, when the current team feast cricket fans with performance such as it displayed on Sunday, it is with great appreciation that it is received. Leading one to contemplate as to the reason why these exciting cricketers - when they apply themselves resolutely to the task - so often fail to deliver the consistently good cricket everybody, and especially  their fans dearly want of them.  Too often we have seen what seemed to be the inexplicable collapse of the team against the opposition, even after they have made a good start. The impression is sometimes conveyed that the team does not have any reliable depth of players, and that it only takes the few more reputable players to fail, and then the collapse will follow.

In limited overs matches, at least, the West Indies have delivered, accounting for their winning of the Twenty20 Championship. Of course, these limited over games can result in unpredictable outcomes at times, as, for example, the fact that the Afghanistan team beat the West Indies in one match.

Still, this Twenty20 success for the West Indies should give a big boost and momentum to the team's self-confidence, and increase their chances of future successes.
One of the biggest challenge for West Indian cricket is the on-going disagreement between the players and their cricketing board. This might be something which is partly due to the fact that the West Indies Cricket Team is made up of players from several different island, adding to the usual political intrigues which is a feature of all sports.
Still, it is the responsibility of the WICB to meet the challenge of ensuring that it is placing its players in a financial and cooperative environment where the players are motivated and committed to perform at their best, and to do so consistently.

With this management/players dispute going on for several years now, a viable settlement might not take place any time soon, so, for the people of the West Indies and cricket lovers all over the world, this demonstration of cricket, lovely cricket, is something to savour.

For now, all is rosy
