BAHRAN'S GOVERNMENT'S DENIAL OF THE RIGHTS OF ITS SHIA CITIZENS; A DESPICABLE ACT.

Will the people of Bahrain have to wait for the will and might of their oppressors to crumble before they gain greater political and personal freedoms?

The news out of Bahrain is that the country's government is using its judicial system to dissolve the Shia opposition group in the country, thereby depriving its Shia population of the right to have their own political voice and representation, outside of the government. It seems that the government is hell-bent on silencing its Shia population by depriving them of all peaceful and legitimate means of legally and peacefully exercising their rights to political and social rights. The government, it appears, is accusing them of causing trouble,

According to an article in The Guardian newspaper, the "Authorities suspended al-Wefaq’s activities and froze its funds last month, accusing the group of creating “a new generation that carries the spirit of hatred” and of having links with “sectarian and extremist political parties that adopt terrorism”.

Bahrain, which is a small Shia majority populated country, of just under 1.4 million citizens, is situated in the Persion Gulf, just to east of its massive Sunni neighbour, Saudi Arabia, which invaded it in 2011 to help the government repress the popular demonstrations for more freedom, and north and west of Qatar, with the Saudi's protogonist, Iran, to its north- east. This small island is also the home of a US carrier fleet, which is strategically position to advance the American's geo-political interests in the region.

Looking at the strategic location of Bahrain in the Persian Gulf, it is not difficult to appreciate which it has such high significance to the Saudis - in whose 'backyard' it is located - and to the Americans, Qataris and Iranians. It is not surprising that the Saudis and the Americans will be guided by the strategic significance of Bahrain, to them, than to any regards to human rights and 'democratic' principles. This is a situation in which you can expect both countries to profess their adherence to human rights and 'democratic' principles, while doing everything in their power to to suffocate them.

It does not help those who are fighting for human rights and political freedoms in Bahrain, that the country is an island, with its closest neighbour being the very repressive Saudi Arabia, with which it is linked by a causeway. Sadly for the people of Bahrain, as opposed to their government, it seems that their fate is linked to that of the people of Saudi Arabia, and that, the transformation of their cry for freedom, into anything like that which the Americans are enjoying in their country, is not likely to happen anytime soon. In the meantime, the people of Bahrain who are agitating for greater freedom, or, just freedom, will have to be even more careful, as their government and that of Saudi Arabia does not need any excuse to exercise greater brutality in its oppression of them. is likely to delayed.

The tactic might have to be changes, due to changing circumstances, but the goal or objective can remain.
