COLOMBIA/FARC PEACE AGREEMENT - (Segunda vez suerte?)TO MUCH TO LOSE TO MAKE IT HOSTAGE TO POLITICS!

There are times when you need to take the first step and just hang on in there until....

Once again, the government of Colombia and the leaders of the FARC movement have reviewed their agreement to bring durable peace to the people of Colombia, by ending the vicious and destructive war which they have fought for 50 years, and came up with a second or revised peace agreement.

The Colombian Government of Manuel Santos has declared its commitment to have this agreement accepted by the people of Columbia and implemented. For the Colombian opposition, however, the cited dissatisfaction with the both the original and the revised peace agreement, is too good a party political opportunity to gain political advantage over the government, to miss.

Whereas for Manuel Santos and his government and FARC, the priority is to achieve what, all things considered, is best for Colombia and its people, all its people, for the leader of the mainstream opposition, Alvaro Ulribe, and the elitist interests which it serves, the priority is for them to regain power and be able to re-establish the pre-agreement status.

Until you develop the flare and dexterity to accomplish more.

In effect, to return Columbia to the path which it had been travelling for the past 50 or more years. The opposition is refusing to look forward to building a new and more inclusive Colombian family or society. They do not want to draw a line under the past and move on, something which, while an individual, a family or even a political party, lacking the necessary, if understandable objectivity to do so, is one which a nation, in the interest of  achieving the greater common good, must be able to do, if it is to be successful at inclusive nation building.

In other words, comprehensive and successful inclusivist nation building requires, as an indispensable condition, leaders who have the vision and savoir faire to achieve it, whereas those who for their own self-interested interests, refused or are unable to move away from 'navel gazing', are not able to do so.

The opponents of the Colombia/FARC peace agreement appear to be unable to pull themselves away from being blinded by their wanting to 'punish FARC severely', and to deprive them of having the agreed enablers, such as delegated rather than elected representatives in the Colombian Assembly, for a limited number of years.

It would not be in the interest of the Colombian people and nation for the current government to acquiesce to the opposition's attempt to take the peace, reconciliation and rebuilding process hostage, in an attempt to gain political advantage. Consequently, it is incumbent on the Government to take whatever peaceful and legitimate measures it can, to have the agreement implemented, and, even if gradually, gain the support of most, if not all Colombians.

The agreement might not be perfect, probably no agreement is perfect, however, the contribution and or sacrifice which is required of those who oppose it, is that of accepting and working with it in its comparative 'imperfection.'

Uniting to achieve a common objective should be much better than fighting to achieve conflicting objectives.
