THE SYRIAN PROXY WAR AND PRESIDENT OBAMA'S AILING LEGACY; HISTORY IS NOT AN IMPARTIAL JUDGE! PART 4

So, where President Obama failed, with his approach towards helping to resolve what has evolved into probably the greatest catastrophe the Syrian people and state has ever experienced, is that he helped to foment the problem by giving succour and support to the forces which have and are rebelling against the Syrian state. He has, as America has always tended to do, whether it is in the Americas, Asia or the Middle East, opted for the 'regime change model of intervention.'

This did not happen when the now President Sisi toppled President Morsi's government, because Morsi's administration, although it might have been on the same side as the Americans, regarding Syria, was not their preferred choice.

President Obama could have intervened much more forcefully and probably even destroyed the legitimate Syrian government, and 'Iraqised' Syria, but that would not have achieved the stability which the country needs. Like in Iraq, it would have made the post-intervention reality worse than the 'normality' which prevailed before the removal of the Saddam regime.

Quite simply, it is very politically naive to think that 'freedom and democracy' will simply blossom out of the bloody pool of a decapitated nation. Just as how one has to experiment and confront numerous hazards when you attempt an organ transplant, so it is with trying to transplant 'democracy.'

It needs to evolve, naturally and gradually, and, just as how you have different varieties of birds, plants and other animals evolving with different characteristics, in different places, but still retaining their belongingness to their particular specie, so it is and should be with the practice of 'democracy.' Like the human race, there is no 'pure form.'

President Obama should have made the call to support the Syrian government, which might have resulted in much less blood shed and destruction. But he did not do so. Instead, his strategy has resulted in or helped the rebels to metamorphosed into and hydra-like creature, which, along with the response of the Syrian government, has laid waste to much of the country and its inhabitants.

A more forceful response would have benefited the political ambitions and objectives of the rebels, but it is unlikely that it would have benefited the majority of the Syrian people, or, for that matter, resulted in less destruction, killing and instability.

To be continued.
