JAMMU AND KASHMIR - INDIA'S OWN BIG 'GAZA ENCLAVE?' THE END.

It should be no surprise that India, a 'democratic' country, is displaying the kind of brutality it is displaying in trying to suppress the dissent of its opponents and ordinary citizens in Jammu and Kashmir.

Just as how we have become accustomed to Israel's brutality towards the Palestinians in the occupied territories. It is inevitable that the process of maintaining the occupation of a people, will eventually lead to the brutalisation and dehumanisation of both the occupied people and the forces maintaining the occupation.

This apparent self-evident truth, however, does not justify the brutality which seems necessary to maintain the occupation of a people or group of people. Rather, it demonstrates the undesirability of oppressing people, since it can only be achieved through the brutalisation of both the oppressor and the oppressed.

Just as how the State of Israel is required to bring her occupation of the Palestinians to a peaceful and just end, so should the State of India show more courage and prudence in bring the conflict in Jammu and Kashmir to a just and peaceful end.

Sixty years of conflict is more than enough; what good can come of having another 60 years more?

You cannot treat people 'as enemies' of the State, and expect them to to identify with being integral members of Indian society; irrespective of their religion, ethnicity and political affiliations.

India needs to redoubled her efforts to find just and effective means of resolving the very complex situation confronting it in Indian administered Jammu and Kashmir. That does not have to mean giving the territories to Pakistan, on the basis that many of the people share the Islamic faith, as do most of the people of Pakistan.

The best way to defends ones country is through establishing enduring peace with your people and your neighbours, and not having to squander the country's resources maintaining an oppressive and destructive offensive/defensive regime.

Religious affiliation, in my view, is a poor and backward basis on which to determine the fate of nations.
