JUST PHILOSOPHISING ON STATES OF BEING - EMPLOYED. PART 1.

Our sense of being, I believe, is related to the intricacies of our external environment, though influenced by how we characteristically perceive of that environment. Essentially, our particular prism for receiving external stimuli and how we tend to process and make sense of them.

We receive stimuli from our external environment through our 5 core senses, visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory and tactile receptors, located in our physical bodies. Of course, it is not all of us who are blessed with all of these core sensory receptors.

Although, just as how we have the apparently innate capacity to adjust and adapt to different conditions in our lives, so are our senses apparently able to make some adjustment.

For example, it has been known for some of them to become more enhanced, in the case of one or more of the others being damaged.

So, you might be tempted to ask, what has all of this to do with a post dealing with the state of you or me being employed; having a job which pays us a wage or salary, and, hopefully, a living one?

Well, just that the state of being employed, or being in employment, has a lot to do with our identity, with how we are seen and perceived of by others and by ourselves.

Being employed help to determine the value which society places upon us, and therefore, how we, as social humans, value ourselves. How we see ourselves in reflection of the mirror which is society.

And, in speaking of 'value', I am not specifically speaking of the remunerative or monetary value which businesses confer on the employees, and use to justify the excessive pay packages which they sometimes pay them.

Having employment or being employed in a consumerist society, is not only essential for being in a position to earn a wage and be able to afford some, if not all of the necessities of life or living, as it were.

It also has other essential benefits and sociological and societal significance. If you or I are unemployed, we might feel uncomfortable amongst people who are employed. It can become similar to a person without any children being in the company of parents being parents and expressing their tendency to make the wonders of having children the main topic of conversation.

Probably not intending to make the childless persons - a state which they might actually relish - feel out of place or bored. But just because their children and caring for them have now become their most important raison de tre for working or living, they have this 'natural' tendency to bring them into many or most of their social interactions.

To be continued.
