JUST PHILOSOPHISING ON STATES OF BEING - EMPLOYED. PART 2.

Just as how having children give their parents a new status, that of 'being a parent', and, probably 'the right to speak on matters of children and parenthood', so does being in employment.

Being in employment can attest to your commitment to work for a living. It speaks of you having pride and ambition, of you being industrious.

It says something about you or me having financial independence, full or partial, and of us being able to care for our families, if we have any. It is an attestation to us 'being responsible members of society.' Not least because we are seen, rightly or wrongly, as contributing towards the maintenance of the State, instead of it and 'the tax-payers' subsiding us.

When we hear the news about unemployment and 'the unemployed', we do not have to look embarrassed, as might be the unemployed. Because the news is about 'them', 'the unemployed', and not about 'us', 'the employed.'

We might live in fear of becoming 'one of them', tomorrow, or the day after, but, for now, we can relish the 'privilege' of not being 'one of them.'

'Themness' is something we want to confine to the nightmares of our sleeping state, and not something we want to ever intrude into the reality of our waking state.

We can tolerate nightmares in our dreams, knowing that it is a matter known only to us. But the gods forbid that we should have to live in the, at times, nightmarish state of 'themness.'

And so it is that, in a consumeristic, capitalistic state where there is no welfare safety net, or an ever decreasing one, having a job, being in employment, does a great deal to influence our sense of who we are, our self-confidence, self-worth and our self-esteem.

Partly because of how society and governments make the 'unemployed' feel, and the value or lack of value they attach to the state of being unemployed, and to those who fall into that social category.

To be continued.
