JUST A THOUGHT - THE 'BASTARDISED NATIONAL IDENTITY' WHICH IS DEVOLVING BRAZIL FROM BEING A PROGRESSIVE NATION. PART 4.

We have seen how Brazil went out of her way to host the Olympics, which she could scarcely afford to do, and, most likely have done so at the alternative cost of not being able to make inroads into reducing the level of poverty and deprivation in the country.

What benefits the poor received from the hosting of the Olympics was temporary and incidental. It probably enable many to hustle more effectively for the duration of the Olympics, before having to revert to their pre-existing condition of having to live a miserable hand to mouth existence.

Conditions which Brazilians have come to accept as 'normal' or 'normative', meaning that they do not require any positive action to ameliorate them. Brazilians can accept the destitution and poverty which surrounds the neighbourhoods of the poor, because that is the way it is, and the rich and the elites, the middle classes, are able to live away from it.

They only have to see it when they are travelling from a to be, and, in any case, after some time they stop seeing it; it is as if it is not really there. The 'problem simply does not exist so it does not need fixing.' And, in any case, there are the paramilitaries who will 'take care of it.'

Brazil's ruling and corrupt elite should be fearing that the masses of the people will revolt as some time, and that the military, which has taken over the country in the past and ruled it as a dictatorship for the benefit of the elites, might not be able to provide them with more than temporary relief or protection.

This almost impregnable dividing wall between the haves and the haves not cannot endure perpetually.

This seems to be the perception which Brazil has been guided by, but the progress of the country is dependent on effective nation building. The building of a nation with which all Brazilians can identify and feel proud of. Where corruption and graft, crime and violence, racism and extreme poverty are no longer common currencies.

To be continued.
