THE NEED TO REFORM AND DEVELOP THE STANDARD OF OUR 'DEMOCRATIC SYSTEMS.' PART 3.

How is it that nothing or very little is apparently being done to fine tune and reform this model, which is so clearly deficient and defective? The fact that the First Past The Post system of choosing ones political representative, is resulting in many of the electorate not being represented on an 'equal basis.'

With, in some cases, more popular votes being required to elect a constituency candidate in one area, while in others, it is less. The fact that a vote for party a, sometimes does not have the same weight or value as one for party b.

As we have seen in the general elections in Britain, in 2015, and the presidential elections in the United States, in 2016. Why should such inequalities within the 'democratic electoral process' be allowed to continue?

Oftentimes simply because the larger parties benefit or appear to benefit from them, at the cost of the smaller parties.  Which aspect of such a process is 'fair', or 'democratic'?

With the electorate, or significant proportions of them finding it more difficult to 'identify' with the political parties, and the governments they form.  As well as their similar and conflicting policies, it is arguable that the 'legitimisation' of both the electoral system and the state, becomes diminished in the eyes of the electorate.

It therefore becomes the responsibility of the political parties, the government and the state to take appropriate action to ensure that both the electoral system and governments become more and not less representative of the diverse and similar views of electorate and the nation's citizens.

And, by so doing, ensuring that the 'authority' which the government and the state are exercising over the people, remain sufficiently 'legitimised' by them.

It does appear that the electoral systems which are being used on mainland Europe, are fairer and more 'democratic' than the British and American models. Britain and America could do well to adopt the 'democratically' best of such models.

Whereas countries on the European mainland appear to have more progressive electoral systems, including the 21 or the 28 EU countries, which have proportional representation systems, Britain and her former colonies, including the United States of America, persist in having the more backward and stagnant First Past The Post system.

To be continued.
