AFRICAN STUDENTS ATTACKED IN INDIA - ARE INDIANS RACIST? PART 2.

Some of the people of India are apparently finding it difficult to label the attacks of criminal elements in their population, on African students, as 'racist.'

It is not clear whether this reluctance is because based on the false premise that 'racism' is a 'white versus black' issue.

Or that, since most, if not all Indians are 'people of colour', like most Africans, then the former cannot be 'racistic' towards the latter.' Which is clearly not the case.

I will, however, qualify this answer, to the effect that.

If 'racism' is to be defined as, 'the perception and/or actions of dislike, hatred and/or intolerance of others, predicated on their differential ethnic origins', then, yes.

Most Indians, to a greater or lesser degree, might or should be able to declare themselves to be 'racist'.

Which is not to say all of them will be proud and not ashamed of being so.

But the people of India  can take some questionable comfort from knowing that, if they are to be deemed to be 'racists', they can be counted as amongst the majority of humans.

We are now at the stage where, it is not the categorisation of one being 'racist', which is of the greatest importance.

But, rather whether and how we are using our 'racism' to negatively impact on the welfare of people on whom we vent it, should the occasion arises to do.

'Racism' does not have to be developed into the full blown disease, as it were, it is quite capable of remaining dormant, like an anti-body or a trait, which is inherent in all of us humans.

One of the things which I found most odious about Mr KC Singh's contribution to the debate, over the racist violence which has been perpetrated against African students studying in India.

Is his regressive suggestion that these students should be housed together. Which, he felt, would make it easier for the Police to keep an eye on them; to ensure their safety, I assume he meant.

However, to do so could make African students more accessible to those racists who want to target them.

It would be a form of ghettoisation of African students. It would be a kind of 'protective detention.'

Which could develop into a situation where they might need passes to venture off the their dormitory environs, with probably 'racist' police harassing them.

To be continued
