JUST PHILOSOPHISING - THE BURKA AND THE WEST: NO CONCESSION? PART 5.

So, taking your way of life with you is understandable and 'natural.'

This cultural, political and social transplantation is both evidence of colonisation and domination. As well been part of the process by which different societies develop and make advances in the world.

But their are serious downsides to it, which is why contemporary societies need to regulate it, so as to avoid future conflict.

So, like Female Genital Torture, which is practised in some societies. It would not make sense for European states to allow the practise of women wearing the burqa to take root in their societies.

Since that would only enable the continuation of the oppressive way of life or ideology.

Which men in 'traditional' male dominated societies and countries have been subjecting their women and females to.

It is the duty of a free state to ensure the individual freedom of all its citizens.  And not allow one or other ethnic group to subject its citizens to unfair and unequal treatment or obligations.

Which are based on customs, values and religious mores which run counter to the upholding of the rights and freedoms of the individuals.

Not to do so could endanger the rights and freedoms of other citizens, who do not have any affinity to such practices.

As we have seen from some Muslims in European countries, who are arguing for the institution of Sharia law in countries in the Europe.

A relatively free and liberal society will not want to endanger its citizens or itself, by allowing practises which it might have allowed in the past.  In its pre-enlightened stage of development, to become established and take hold again.

Whether they be religious, cultural or historical. To do so would be to nurture a situation in which some of its citizens are 'less free than others'.

For  the 'liberal and enlightened State' to take a position of relative intolerance towards 'unenlightened', and oppressive religious and cultural practices.

Which restricts the rights and freedoms of the individual to believe and expresses him/herself, without restricting and harming the rights and freedoms of others, is not, of itself, 'racist' or, indeed, xenophobic.

To be continued.
