EUROPE AND THE WORLD AT A TRANSFORMATIONAL PERIOD IN HISTORY? PART 5.

The world is in crisis but scarce are the leaders who are capable and willing to provide it with the leadership the people need to improve their conditions. Macro threatens the Syrian and Russian governments with unilateral military action in Syria, days after becoming President of France.   Whereas, Merkel, correctly, signals to Europe that Europe must become her own master and protector, as she cannot depends on the Americans and British.

Navigating our way north of China, and across the vast region of Mongolia, and we are into the regions of the Russian Federation.

A Federation with which the European Union and Nato are at war, albeit, by economic sanctions and political isolation.

A situation which has been brought about by what Russia would consider to be her attempts to safeguards 'her strategic self-interests.'

By relieving Ukraine and, ultimately, Nato, of Crimea, and supporting Ukrainian rebels in the breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine, which are on the western borders of Russia.

As well as to create a more reliable buffer between the Russian borders and the encroaching Nato forces. As the formerly but now independent states of the defunct Soviet Union, flock to join the EU and Nato.

And to add to all of this almost global instability, when we consider what is happening in Africa, in the Sahel region, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Somalia.

When we move westward of Russia, we no longer find an oasis of peace in western Europe.

Instead, what we find is a lot of political and economic discontent. We find relatively newly independent nations exercising their 'democratic' rights to chose their elected governments.

But with significant proportion of citizens, for various reasons, not accepting the electoral outcomes.

We find Europeans demonstrating, in sometimes equal measures, their compassion towards refugees from outside of Europe.

While their governments, for party political reasons, demonstrate their rejection and fear of the migrants by strengthening their borders.

The border fences are, once again, being put up, but this time, not to keep these countries citizens from fleeing or travelling westwards to seek freedom and their fortunes.

But to keep the fleeing poor from non-European countries from entering.

These countries want the benefits of being members of Nato and the European Union, but not to be burdened by some the EU's quintessential obligations.

The European Union, like most or many of its constituent member countries, is under great pressure of becoming fractured.

If not actually collapsing from, probably its own internal contradictions.

As it constantly expands eastwards into Europe, and becomes bloated and unmanageable.

Becoming more dysfunctional, as it endeavours to evolve, not only into a de facto, but a de jure political, economic and legislative empire.

We have the United Kingdom voting to leave the European Union, and declaring that it wants to chart a new way forward in the world.

To be continued.
