THE BRITISH GENERAL ELECTION RESULTS - WELL DONE, BRITAIN, YOU HAVE WON THIS STAGE! PART.1.

'In politics, like in many or all events which are yet to take place, you cannot guarantee that you will get what you wish for, or be able to deliver the promise you have made. So, be honest, add a proviso, such as, all things being equal or constant, which they rarely are, in a changing and revolving world.'

A big Congratulation to the the British electorate who bothered to cast their vote during the 2017 British general election.

Which has resulted in, after the votes for 646 of the 650 constituency seats were counted.

313 seats for the ruling Conservative Party, 261 for the Labour Party, 12 for the Liberal-Demorcat Party, and 35 for the Scottish Nationalist Party.

With a reported 76 per cent of the British electorate voting, it should still be a matter of concern that 24 per cent, for various reasons.
But probably mainly their complacency and sense of disillusionment with party politics, and politics in general.

Did not bother to make the effort to travel to their local polling stations, and exercise their 'democratic right', in a positive manner. As opposed to doing so by not voting for any of the contending parties.

And, of course, when we drill down more, we are also confronted with the common anomalies of Britain's First Past the Post electoral system.

Anomalies such as the fact that, with the Conservatives winning only 2 per cent more of the electoral votes, they still end up with 54 more seats than the Labour Party, which won 40 per cent of the votes.

While The Green Party, with 2 per cent of the electoral votes caste, only won a single seat.

Where as the Tories have asked the electorate for a carte blanche mandate which would have, they believe, given them the authority to 'proceed full speed ahead, come what may' - ironically.

The electorate, all but the 42 per cent who voted for the Conservatives, chose not to do so. Probably preferring a more caution, 'a steady she goes, lads', and prudent approach.

One which, probably, does not see the 'will of the 48 per cent of the electorate who voted for Brexit, the meaning of which they have now had more time to ponder, as quite infallible.

Not a resounding validation of the principle of 'one person one vote', or of 'all votes are of equal value.'

No, not when it is all about the relative sizes and power of the political constituencies, with many with less electorates having the same or more elective weight than others with more electorates.

By not giving the ruling Conservative Party and the country's Prime Minister the carte blanche mandate they wanted to lead the country.

And pursue the hard Brexit they wanted to negotiate with the European Union, among other very important objectives on their agenda.

The British electorate has given expression to their increasing concerns about a whole range of issues.

Issues such as the wisdom of pursuing Brexit, and in the manner in which the current Government is doing so.

To be continued.
