THE PARADOX OF THE IMMIGRANT PART 1.

Probably the biggest paradox of the immigrant, irrespective of which country he/she originates from, is their commitment to what should now become their past.

And their resistance to or rejection of their present and future, which is that of what and who they are to become.

The immigrant struggles to make the changes which are demanded of him/her, by their adopted country.

And yet, they can only truly become  a part of, and allow his adopted country to become apart of him.

By letting go of as much of the past him/or her as they need to, evolve an identity which reflects their new and objective reality.

The immigrant, it seems, want to hold on to his past, 'his country of origin', 'his religion', his culture,'

What he calls 'his identity', even more than his former country men and women whom he has left behind.

Whereas the people they have left behind, in the absence of any external challenge or demands.

Are able to take the things which have now become the enhanced source of the immigrant's identity,  his sense of being, of security and feeling of continuity, in the land of the other, for granted.

To be continued.
