JUST PHILOSOPHISING - ON MID-NIGHT MASS AND THE NEED FOR A MORE WORTHY GOD/S! PART 3.

Looking around in the church, as Mid-Night Mass was taking place, I was sharing this refuge with probably 50 or 70 other worshippers, all of us adults, and most being retired or nearing retirement age.

It is the case that religious, especially establishment religion, has become the preserve of the older generations?

Though I suspect that this has nothing to do with the older generations being nearer to the end of the journey of life, and being more anxious to curry favours with the gods.

It is more a matter, it seems to me, that the older generations have always been the repository of societies' traditions and customs.

It was very noticeable that that the solemnity of the occasion was also marked by a certain staidness, a lack of any passion from the congregation.

It was perfunctory, even, a matter of going through the motions, both for the officiating priests, and for the congregation.

Someone who was new to this kind of ritual, might even be moved to ask, at the conclusion of the proceedings: 'Is that it'?

As they vent their sense of disappointment? Indeed, god, if there was one around, might even have been moved to ask the same question.

As it seems to me, that nobody who had witnessed and participated in this ceremony could honestly say they have enjoyed it. That it had uplifted or made them feel uplifted.

The deputising vicar probably did his best, trying to explain how Jesus Christ was transformed into a human, to probably make him more acceptable to us humans, and to help him to better empathise with us.

How he, the Son of God, had left his regal and celestial paraphernalia behind, in Heaven, and allow himself to 'be born in a lowly manger, so that he could better experience what it is like to 'be human.'

Although, according to the fable, this supposed lowly and unconventional birth, did not prevent Christ from reverting back to type.

To be continued!
