JUST A THOUGHT - ON THE WEDDING OF MEGAN MARKLE AND PRINCE HARRY, NOW DUKE AND DUCHESS OF SUSSEX! PART 1.

A Very Big Congratulation to the organisers of the Wedding of Prince Harry and his bride, Megan Markle, on Saturday 19th May 2018, at Windsor Castle. 

 Probably needlessly to say, it was a most resplendent and regal ceremony. 

 Like clock work it seemed to have gone, with every participant performing his/her, their allocated roles with the required decorum and skill. 

 It has been reported that the ceremony cost £32 millions, which, it seems to me, is money well spent, especially if we were to compare the pleasure it brought to people, with the pain and destruction, say 40 Cruise missiles fired on Syria.  


Considering how the event captivated the attention of, and massaged the morale of the British people. 

As well as the attention of hundreds of millions of people all over the globe. 

 None but the most cynical of whom, can have failed to extract some enjoyment, some humility and mirth, from a wedding which was so full of colour, symbolism and spectacle.

 This was a grand Royal wedding which was symbolic on many levels. 

 As is the case with all 'for love' marriages, it was symbolic of the mortal or human love of two people, Prince Harry and the now Duchess of Sussex, for one another. 


It was also symbolic of the of the continuing evolution of the British Royal Family, into being an institution in which Princes and Princesses no longer only marry other Princess and Princes.

 The Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, was also symbolic, in having set the precedent, at least, within living memory. 

 Of 'a person of colour', as the Americans tend to say, marrying a Prince from the British Royal Family. 

 In that Meghan Markle, now Duchess of Sussex, is the daughter of an African American mother, the lovely and dignified, Ms Doria Ragland. And a white American father, Thomas Markle.

Diplomacy ought to be the process by which nations, through their governments, establish and maintain mutually beneficial and peaceful relationships between them; Diplomacy is not, like the Gulf Cooperation Council members and their allies, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and the UAE states, trying to bully and intimidate Qatar into doing their bidding, by surrendering its sovereignty.  Neither is diplomacy what the American government is doing, in using sanctions to force the governments of states of Iran, Russia and North Korea, into complying with its demands.  About what action they should or should not take in pursuing what they consider to be in the interest of their countries and people.  No, none of this is diplomacy. Rather it is method of force and compulsion, which is not synonymous with principle or practice of diplomacy.  Which is about the art of establishing and maintaining peaceful and mutually beneficial relationships between different countries.
