JUST A THOUGHT - ON IMRAN KHAN ELECTION VICTORY AND A PROBABLE NEW DAWN FOR PAKISTAN. PART 2.

Imran Khan has indicated that he will be setting up a government which endeavour to govern on behalf and for all the people of Pakistan. 

And would be seeking to resolved long established conflicts and tensions with Pakistan's neighbours, including India, with which Pakistan has been fighting over Kashmir for the past 60 or so years. 

The Kashmir Jamu conflict is, of course, an extremely complex one. 

One which it is difficult to imagine that the all powerful and omnipotent Pakistan army, and the religious and sectarian extremists, would allow a civilian government  to resolve in an amicable manner.


There is or has been some concerns that Imran Khan and his PTI party (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf) are being 'sponsored' by the Pakistan army. 

An army which, like the Egyptian army and the Myanmar army, allow civilian government govern or appear to govern the country on their behalf. 

Pakistan has had populist governments in the past, with the Bhutto dynasty probably being the most notable, and the Sharifs after them.

Is Imran Khan at risk of becoming Pakistan's Aung San Suu Kyi? We shall have to wait and see.


As usual, we can expect that people's expectations of the yet to take office PTI coalition government will be too high. 

Something which might not be helped by the tendency of newly elected incumbents to promise more than they will be able to deliver. At least, in their tenure of office.

People, both friends and enemies, supporters and opposition, which expect them to make Pakistan into a paradise, with poverty being banished overnight. 

With religious conflicts which goes back even before the partition of the Indian subcontinent, and the subsequent war between the former East and West Pakistan.

Diplomacy ought to be the process by which nations, through their governments, establish and maintain mutually beneficial and peaceful relationships between them; Diplomacy is not, like the Gulf Cooperation Council members and their allies, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and the UAE states, trying to bully and intimidate Qatar into doing their bidding, by surrendering its sovereignty.  Neither is diplomacy what the American government is doing, in using sanctions to force the governments of states of Iran, Russia and North Korea, into complying with its demands.  About what action they should or should not take in pursuing what they consider to be in the interest of their countries and people.  No, none of this is diplomacy. Rather it is method of force and compulsion, which is not synonymous with principle or practice of diplomacy.  Which is about the art of establishing and maintaining peaceful and mutually beneficial relationships between different countries.
