JUST A THOUGHT - ON HOW 'FAILING COUNTRIES' IN THE AMERICAS CANNOT RESOLVE THEIR PROBLEMS BY RETURNING TO THE 'OLD WAYS.' PART 4.
Well, yes, it is true that the basic motive was the same; that of creating wealth for mainly the benefit of the ruling political, economic and religious elites.
But there were also fundamental differences.
Such as the use of indigenous peoples and the commoditisation of Africans; and their mass importation or transportation to the 'New World' colonies.
To be used as enslaved labour to create the colonisers' wealth.
There was also the fundamental difference, in that this enslavement of the indigenous peoples and imported 'commoditised' Africans, had to be 'justified' and 'rationalised.'
A challenge or obstacle which was dealt with by the development and application of the spurious theory of 'the natives and Africans not being quite human.'
Or not being as human as the apparently more enlightened Europeans.
Which, of course, would have been a description befitting a minority of Europeans; the 'enlightened elite.'
And not the majority, who were being held under the yoke of the ruling elite.
But, in a very hierarchical and stratified stage of human global development, the 'theory of racial superiority' would have served its purpose.
Because, just as how, say, the Poor Law in Britain, was designed to be so oppressive towards those who would be its recipients, that nobody would want to fall so low.
