Of course there were times in this or that prison when he would be seriously assaulted, being knocked to the floor and kicked in his head, eg, but he would survive all that he was fated to endure.

His anger with the system, and his absorption by the paraphernalia of the criminal subculture might have assisted his journey. 

As might have his 'black and white' perception of politics, race and music. As might have his return to writing poetry. 

Things were tough and very tough at times, but the family found visiting Kazaliwa helping then in continuing to manage the pain of his incarceration and the threat it presented to his welfare.



 

Seeing him would reassure them that he was alright, he was coping. They found his rejection of his mixed-race relatives painful and poignant. 

Whether by design or some unexplained phenomenon, it did not make sense to them that he could have moved from a position of moderation, of acceptance of his relatives to one of rejection and denial. 

At the same time, there were signs of Kazaliwa moving back from the void. 

Such as when he made the conscious decision to stop rapping, because, as he explained.
