And the extent to which we have succeeded in assimilating them into our subsequent experiences and move on with our lives.'

He noticed that the young man was carrying a long black holdall bag, suspended under his right arm, by a long strap balanced on his shoulder.

He instinctively knew that it was their son, Kazaliwa. Although the young man had not told them of the precise date and time of his pending release. 

The family knew that his discharge was due to take place sometime in September 2014.

And now the day, the fateful and much longed  for day and time has arrived. 


Nzuli and Mfanyazaki would have many a times reflected on and rehearsed how they would have driven to the prison to await and collect their son upon his release. 

But that was not to be so. Kazaliwa, for his own undeclared reasons, wanted to make his own way home after his released.

And, as Mfanyazaki went to open the front door, his  stomach was filled with an elevated feeling of relief, excitement and happiness. 

Even for a man who is not given to displaying his feeling much.
