In their/his attempt to keep a very tight hold on what they expected of Kazaliwa's conduct and behaviour. 

As it transpired, wrongly thinking that, if Kazaliwa knew that he had no option but to comply with their rules, he would have to do so.

Knowing that continuing to live with them, would have been better than any alternatives opened to him. 

They had probably not considered how he, their son, having secured his conditional freedom from 'Jail.'  



Might have considered any challenge he confronts on the outside, to be better than being incarcerated on the inside. 

There were rules to be followed, such as 'no smoking in the house.' 

Yes, if and when Mfanyazaki and/or Nzuri reflected on the matter. 

They might have paid more attention to the psychological challenges which their son might have had to face.
