JUST A THOUGHT ON - 'SURVIVING SOCIAL WORK. PART 6.

One of the most crucial practice challenges for probably most social workers.

Is that of achieving a good balance between writing too much or too little about what they observe.

When they saw the child and the family, and what conclusions they draw from it and what they already know about the child and his/family.

It is this documentation, after all, which will assist anybody examining at the social worker's files.  To appreciate and understand the extent that social worker was or was not aware of what had been happening.

With regards to the needs of the child and the family, and how these needs, including the need for safeguarding, were being met or insufficiently met.

For middle managers, there will be questions such as, Is the social work team adequately staffed? How heavy is the team's caseload and workload? How many vacancies has the team got? What is the health of the team?

For the public and the media, there will be a stream of  question.

Such as, 'wasn't there any social worker involved?' 'What was social services doing?' 'Why did they all it to happen?' 'Why didn't they do anything, such as removing the child?'

All of which could be a terrifying and traumatic experience for any social worker and social work team involved.

To be continued!
