Not so for Valtteri Bottas and George Russell. Bottas had been having a rather terrible race, one which needed to get much better, but was to become even worse. 

As his and Russell's cars make contact with each other at very high speed and spectacularly took themselves out of the race. 

And yet, it was this abysmal departure from the race for Bottas, that was to provide Hamilton with the opportunity he needed to turn him race around. 

His comparative victory was partly earned on the back of Bottas' and, yes, Mercedes' misfortune. Truly, the gods could have been said to have been having a hearty, if ironic laugh.

Of course, as they do not speak to us humans, as usual, we are left to make of it what we will. 

What is clear, is that all the drama of the 2021 Imola Grand Prix resulted in a most exciting and enjoyable race. 

All the more so, as neither Bottas nor Russell sustained any serious bodily harm from their spectacular crash. 

Something for which they, the racing industry and us, the spectators, are forever grateful to the added protection of the 'Halo.'  

And how terribly disappointing - admittedly, probably not for Lando Norris - it would have been.  

Had the Indubitable Lewis Hamilton not been able to keep his engine going and been able to extricate Car 44 from the track side and place it back on the circuit and and continued with his race? 

Had he not been able to demonstrate, again, and with the hands of providence or the gods, that a racer's race is never really done until  the race is finished, while he continues to have a responsive car under and around him.

And now, the field is set for the third race of the evolving season, when Max and Lewis, Red Bull and Mercedes.  Will be presented with the opportunity to see which, if either of them, can accumulate an appreciable lead in the 2021 Championship.
