JUST PHILOSOPHISING ON - SOCIAL WORK AND THE ADOPTION DILEMMA. PART 8.

Placing the child in a similar position as any other children living with their legal parents

The local authority can, within its means and legal responsibilities, do what is legally required to support and guard against a child or young person's prospective adoption placement breaking down.

However, once the adoption order has been granted by the court, the local authority cannot give any guarantees as to the longer term success or breakdown of the adoption.

Children and young people who are fated to be moved into the care system, the care of local authorities.

Are at risk of having more instabilities and insecurities in their lives than those who do not have the need to experience the care system.

This is not necessarily, or mostly because of their care experiences, although that is likely to be the primary cause, in some cases.

But because of both what they were experiencing before, and what they have experienced as a result of coming into care. As well as their ability to deal with what they have experienced.

People who adopt other people's children have to take responsibility for the outcome of the adoption.

Some of them might sometimes  wrongly apportion blame onto the local authorities or adoption agencies which made the adoption placement.

Probably believing that they should be given priority support, based on the conscious or subconscious presumption that they have done the adopted child and/or the adoption agency a favour, by adopting their now legal child.

At the same prospective and actual adoptors sometimes do complain and voice dissatisfaction with the amount of relevant information about the child and his/her family, which the relevant agencies had given them.

With the inference being that they might or would have acted differently than they have done; including probably not going ahead with the adoption.

To be continued!
