AN ENIGMATIC AND POIGNANT JOURNEY AROUND MY AGEING AND EVOLVING MOTHER! PART 128.

 

After all, her falling is somewhat inevitable while she has this freedom. 

Just as how it is inevitable that, providing she continues along the current trajectory that her life is taking.  

There is a certain inevitability that there could/will come a time when she loses her the ability, if not the will to be mobile. 

Thus have I come to the conclusion that it is better to focus  on making my dear mother's living/sleeping space, environment safer, so that, when she does falls, there are no or less hazards to harm her.

And even this focussing on making my dear mother's living space safer, has its own risks. 

No only in terms of that of curtailing her interaction with her living space.  

But also the risks of introducing 'safety features, equipment' into it, which could make more demands on her already decreasing cognitive and physical functioning abilities.

Of course, the challenge of addressing this issue of safety versus the right of a person to exercise the freedoms over which they still have control, is not an easy one. 

There is a price which has to be paid for one's exercise of one's freedom, however limited that freedom might be. 

My dear mother does not want to have to go into  a care home, and neither do I nor other members of her family think she needs to do so. 

This price which has to be paid, is not only financial and the hurt, the bruises and bumps which my dear mother might and sometimes does sustain, for example, in her most recent fall several days ago. 

But the price can also involve the risks which paramedics take each time they are called out to attend to my dear mother, after another fall. 

It also involve the potential risks from infections in the hospital, which my dear mother is confronted with, each time she has to be taken to A&E, just to make sure that she has not suffered any as yet concealed injury.
