In the end, Hamilton trailed home behind Max by 1.333 seconds. However, the margin of Max's win is much bigger than it might appear, or, looked at from Hamilton's perspective, his comparative loss is much larger than it might seem. 


Because, like the person who only missed winning the lottery by one number, it really does not matter whether it is only one or more numbers they got wrong. 

They still failed to win. Similarly, it really does matter whether  It did not matter whether Hamilton came up 1 or 20 seconds short. 

He still ended the race behind Max. And with the Championship race being this close, only winning or losing or DNFing it really matters.

Unfortunately for Team Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton, unlike the small margin by which Max won the race, the points points advantage which it accrues to Max, is quite another matter. 






Because, here, a 12 points difference between him and Max, is, indeed, not small matter. Verstappen's 12 points advantage is very big and significant. 

Why? Well, with the performances of Red Bull's and Team Mercedes' cars being so closely matched, with the former probably having a slight or better advantage over Car 44. 

Hamilton and Team Mercedes cannot rely on Hamilton being able to race down and overtake Verstappen. Unless Max's Car 33 were to become a lame-duck, as it were.

No; for Hamilton and Team Mercedes to win the 2021 Drivers World Championship, both of them will have to consistently deliver marginally better performances in all all areas, for the rest of the season. 





This applies to Qualifying as well as on race days. Team Mercedes must out-Max Verstappen and Red Bull in both racing performance and race strategies. 

Plus, of course, having the most of any good fortune arising from the fateful interventions of the gods.

Can such a thing happen? Yes; but it can also happen for Verstappen and Red Bull. Will it happen? That we do not know. 

We shall have to wait and see, as we, somewhat like each of the racers, experience and enjoy each of the next 5 races. One at a time, and do justice to the fact that more of our time is spent on the journey, than at its end.
