Deaths and funerals doeth maketh the occasion for truces between estranged or at war family members, and I cannot say I did not relish said opportunity on this sad but also auspicious occasion. 

Even as I made my way towards a favourite nephew, the son of a favourite but, sadly, brother who had passed a good twenty years ago. 

It was good that he was as pleased as I was, to see me, even as we amiably greeted each other. 

My soul, as I might colloquially frame it, was also pleased to witness the presence of other relatives, even though they and I were not able to summon up the courage to approach each other and exchange greetings. 

And even as I looked around me, both outside and now, inside the church to see whether and which relative who I had not seen for some years, were present. 






I began to contemplate whether the thawing of family estrangements would survive this coming together. 

Whether this feeling of poignant euphoria would survive this event; this day, and, if so, for how long?

But now, we were required to stand up and allow the inimitable Revd.  to take charge and conduct us according to the Order of Service. 

The service was seemingly well received. Including, as it were, some stirring hymns and heart-felt and  poignant tributes from members of my dear mother's family. 

Notable were the tributes, and the eulogy from two nieces, one of whom could deservedly lay a claim to being my dear mother's favourite granddaughter.

   It is unlikely that things were ever getting better. All or many things are indeed 'bright and beautiful', but did the lord god really made them all? And what about the things which are not 'bright and beautiful'?
