MONACO GRAND PRIX - A MATTER OF GOING THROUGH THE MOTION?

So, what should I say about the Monaco Grand Prix of the 2022 Formula 1 Season?

Well, of course I could say a lot, even if much of what I would say, if honestly said, would be in the realm of a very boring and tedious grand prix.

Yes, having endured the Miami Grand Prix with its  rather dated and in your face Americanaesque atmosphere, well might Formula 1 fans have been looking forward to enjoying a real classic race at the Monaco Grand Prix.

That, at least, might have been the hope, the understandable expectation.

Because, although the MGP has the characteristic of being able to devolve into a very gruelling and tedious race.  It is also a circuit which is able to and has delivered exciting races.

Unfortunately, however, this year's Monaco Grand Prix delivered nothing of the kind.

It was a most boring race which saw the racing cars going round and round, following the car in front and rarely having the opportunity to do any overtaking.

A situation which, along with the confined nature of a road circuit track, would have presented an additional challenge to the racers; that of keeping awake.

With the the outcome of the race being largely predicted, barring any Abu Dhabiesque phenomenon or powerful intervention of the gods, which did not happen, teams Red Bull and Ferrari duly took the honours.

With Sergio Perez making it to P.1, which made up somewhat for him losing out to his team mate, Verstappen in the MGP.

While Carlos Sainz and Verstappen completed the winning Podium, in that order.

Team Mercedes had hoped that the MGP would have provided them with  the opportunity to ascertain the current level of their incremental progress in the development of their cars.

However, this was not to be, as their failure to promote their cars to the lead or top order of Qualifying, ensured that they would pretty much end the race in their starting or even lower positions.

With overtaking in the race being of lower probability than in other grand prix.

So, that being the case, we must now await the outcome of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix to see, not whether Hamilton can win the 2022 Formula 1 Drivers' Championship, as his chances have receded greatly.

But rather whether Team Mercedes have progressed to the point of becoming a competitive and reliable competitor in the Championship, and at least provide Russell with the boost to over-take the 3 leading contenders in from of him.

For now, A Very Big Congratulation to Team Red Bull and Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen, for making it to P.1 and P.2, and to Team Ferrari and Carlos Sainz for making it to P.3.
