'What we recall of our experiences of the past, tends to be a factor of how they impacted on our senses at the time, the strength of our continuing attachment to those experiences.  

And the extent to which we have succeeded in assimilating them into our subsequent experiences and move on with our lives.'

But none of this would prevent Kazaliwa from making the conversion of seeing the world in mostly or primarily 'black and white', and developing or taking on and projecting a racist philosophy. 

It is not clear when this transformation began. The trauma of his girlfriend's disloyalty and dramatic breakup of their relationship might have been a factor. 

His increasing consumption of popular ~American and West Indian 'gangsta culture' might have been another. As has probably been his hatred of the police, 'the system', and his positioning of himself on the other side of 'the law', as it was.

Whatever it was, by the time Kazaliwa spent his first months in the prison system, he seemed to have become a confirmed 'racist.' 

A young man who seemingly was no longer able to continue to accept and love his many relatives of white and black heritage.

This apparent deficit of empathy and the ability to apply it, would take Kazaliwa many years to begin the long process of turning it around, and replacing it with a more compassionate view of other people.

But for now, Kazaliwa was in a tough place. He has now been incarcerated and condemned to serve probably upto 5 years in a place which was neither friendly to those who have been assigned to it, nor was it meant to be so.
